This is the first time a member has been expelled from this Council.
The Council of Europe, headquartered in Strasbourg, said through a statement on March 16th that it has unanimously adopted the motion “that says the Russian Federation can no longer be a member of the organisation”.
This decision comes in days after Russia had announced the organisation that it would withdraw, adding that the Russian “Federata ceases to be a member of the Council of Europe from today, after 26 years of member states”.
The Council of Europe had suspended Russia's participation on February 25th, a day after Moscow began its unprotested invasion of Ukraine.
Council of Europe Secretary General Marija Pejcinovic Buric has described the attack on Ukraine as a “flagrant violation of the Council of Europe's status and the European Court of Human Rights, the institution which the Council oversees. / REL
