Biden administration officials, including National Security Council Director for the Western Hemisphere Juan Gonzalez and the US special presidential envoy for hostage issues, Roger Carstens, were sent to Macau over the weekend for talks on the issue, the source said, as well as to discuss the American issue.
Washington imposed oil sanctions from Venezuela in 2019 and closed the American Embassy in Caracas after viewing Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro's victory in the 2018 elections as theft.

The West has been reluctant so far to impose significant sanctions on Russia's energy sector due to its impact on the global economy, but is now approaching this as Europe is working to diversise its energy sources.
