Twenty-three years ago, NATO launched operation Allied Forces to end a decade of bloodshed in the Balkans.
This intervention came only after it had exhausted all diplomatic routes to end a brutal campaign of ethnic cleansing supported by the Milosevic regime.
The American Embassy in Pristina has recalled the launch of bombings against Serbia.
In a writing on the official Facebook page, it is said that the use of force from NATO in this case was necessary and legitimate.
Allow me to remind this Council that the UN Security Council has voiced its concerns about the threat that the serious humanitarian situation in Kosovo and the growing number of refugees present for international peace and security”.
Today, we remember hundreds of thousands of innocent people expelled from their homes and thousands who were killed or disappeared because of the violent nationalism of the Milosevic regime and its forces”.
The issue is said to be the duty of the governments of Serbia and Kosovo to ensure that all victims and their families have full access to justice and information on the fate of their loved ones.
We deeply regret losing the lives of innocent civilians, including those who lost their lives during this military operation. We remember and mourn all those families who lost loved ones in the conflicts of the 1990s. When visiting Belgrade in 2016, President Beiden added his personal condolences to the families of those who lost their lives during the wars of the years, including as a result of NATO air campaign. And today I add my heartfelt condolences”, it goes away.
It also stresses that the United States strongly supports a democratic, prosperous and peaceful future for the Western Balkans.
The US encourages Kosovo and Serbia to double efforts through EU facilitated dialogue to reach a comprehensive normalisation agreement that should focus on mutual recognition.
The accord will require flexibility, compromise and political courage on both sides.
Clearly, the status quo prevents Serbia and Kosovo from achieving their full potential.
Let us honor the memory of those who lost by working together to build a future of peace and prosperity for all in the Western Balkans”, it is said in the end.
