A plane of American soldiers landed in Poland on Sunday, which strengthened Washington's NATO ally at a time of tension due to the accumulate of Russian troops on the Ukrainian border, Reuters reported, citing her witness.
US President Joe Biden ordered on Wednesday the deployment of an additional 3,000 troops in Poland and Romania, in which Washington wants to ensure its allies stand firm with them.
The Pentagon announced that 1700 soldiers, mainly from the 82nd Air Division, will be transferred from North Carolina to Poland.
A day earlier, the commander of the 82nd Air Division, Major General Christopher Donahue, arrived in Poland by plane.
At the time, several planes with American military equipment and an intelligence unit landed at Rezov-Jasionka Airport.
It is not known how many troops arrived in Poland today, but the C17 aircraft can carry 102 parachutists with equipment, according to the American Air Force Web site.
Our state contribution in Poland shows our solidarity with all our allies in Europe. Clearly, during this period of uncertainty we know that we are stronger together,” said Donahue on Sunday.
Polish Defence Minister Mariusz Blazzak said, just minutes after the plane landed, that it was the first group of American soldiers “from a elite unit”.
“More planes will descend in the following hours. Soldiers will operate in the southeastern part of our country”, he added.
Russia has denied allegations that it plans to invade Ukraine, but has deployed more than 100,000 troops along the Ukrainian border, and said it could take military action if NATO does not accept its demands, including a promise Ukraine will not join NATO.
