Turkey's fighter planes hit targets of Kurdish militants, including training camps, shelters and areas where ammunition was stored in Iraq and northern Syria, the Turkish Defence Ministry said on Wednesday.
Air strikes are part of Turkey's ongoing campaign in Iraq and Syria against the Kurdistan Workers' Party and the Syrian Kurdish militia, two groups Turkey describes as terrorist groups.
Turkey's Defence Minister Hulus Akar said on Wednesday that the operation was successful and that the multi-terrorist “ ” have been killed.
Only terrorists and targets belonging to terrorists have been hit. Terrorist shelters, bunkers, hotels, caves used by terrorists have been destroyed. Terrorists once again sense the power of Turkey's Armed Forces”, Akar said.
Iraq's military condemned the air strikes, arguing that Turkey's infiltrate into the Iraqi air zone constituted violations of sovereignty.
Turkey said that all aircraft that participated in the operation, which took place in the areas of Derrick, Sinyar and Karacak, have returned to their bases. The Turkish side gave no details about the number of victims from these attacks.
An Iraqi security official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said at least 20 air strikes hit the mountain area of Sinyar.
This area, where the Iraqi minority Yazidi lives, is under the control of several armed forces and various groups, including Kurdistan Workers' Party militants.
The Kurdistan Workers' Party has launched a uprising against Turkey's state in 1984. Over 40,000 people have been killed in the conflict, which in the past was mostly focused on southeast Turkey.
The Kurdistan Workers' Party is also known as a terrorist organisation by the United States and the European Union.
