The United States, the European Union and NATO condemned the attack and vowed to hold Russia responsible.
On 21 February, Russian President Vladimir Putin has made the decision to recognise the separatist regions of Ukraine, Donjeck and Luhansk, as independent states, and has ordered the deployment of Russian forces to those territories. The West has strongly condemned this action, calling it a suspension for full invasion.
Russia has collected more than 150,000 armed forces and heavy military equipment at the borders with Ukraine, which NATO has described as the largest military gathering on the European continent since the end of the Cold War.
The Russian leader is trying to prevent Ukraine's NATO membership, which he has described as a existential threat and to prevent the Western alliance's eastward expansion.
