During a joint press conference with State Secretary Antony Blinken, Borrell called for diversification of energy sources to reduce dependence on Russia, the main supplier of natural gas in Europe, and to ensure the stability of the gas market, which today is 10 times more expensive in the EU than a year ago.
“Today, we have sent a strong message of mutual determination to strengthen energy security in the EU and our immediate environment. I mean Ukraine, but also the Western Balkans”, Borrell said.
He stressed the importance of joint work between the EU and the United States on the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources, respectively, in meeting the final goal of climate neutrality.
Borrell devoted great importance to the unique response that the EU and the US have to Russian threats in Eastern Europe.
He stressed that Moscow has repeatedly been called on for de-progressing the situation and that diplomatic activities are continuing at different levels.
We believe that a diplomatic solution is still possible and that is a clear priority. At the same time, we are determined that any further aggression against Ukraine will have major consequences. Hopefully for the best, but we are preparing for the worst”, Borrell said.
The head of EU diplomacy concluded that if Russia continues with aggression, EU and US activities will be co-ordinated, including sanctions.
