In September, when the country was in energy collapse, Kosovo sold electricity to Serbia

In September of this year, when citizens were facing severe electricity reductions, Kosovo has been at the peak of the electricity trade with Serbia, the newspaper Infocus reports. The paper has provided facts showing that during the very month when the country was in energy collapses, Kosovo has exported more than it imported electricity from networks of neighbouring countries.

In September, according to documents being kept hidden from public opinion, the amount exported to neighbouring countries from Kosovo's power grid to neighbouring countries has been 323 thousand and 521 megawatts.

Imports from these countries for the same period this month of the energy crisis have been 273 thousand and 288 megawatts.

MST: Import from Serbia to top first place

Serbia, based on these documents, is the country that has downloaded the largest amount of electricity to Kosovo's power grid.

However, some 25 thousand and 220 megawatts of electricity have gone from Kosovo's network to Serbia's.

This amount may have been exported during the night hours when production is higher than consumption and prices are often smaller than production value.

But the scandal lies in the large amount of import from Serbia that is multiple higher than with Albania and with all other states.

The amount of electricity imported from Serbia, according to those documents provided by Infocus newspaper, is short of 170 thousand megawatts of electricity.

If this amount is calculated at the price confirmed by KEDS in September, which is said to have reached 700 euros for megawatts, it turns out that this imported amount amounts to less than 118m euros. Or an average of 500 euros for megawatts turns out that electricity from Serbia has been imported worth 85m euros in September alone.

There is a falling “from domestic production and there is a huge increase in prices in international markets, where the energy of peak time has reached as much as 700 euros/MWh. This creates a difficult situation and is the indicator of a major challenge that awaits the system during the winter”, KEDS spokesman Viktor Buzhala had declared in July of this year, when Kosovo was facing electricity reductions by six hours without power.

However, prices and neither the names of companies that have traded this electricity are known correctly, or was Kosovo's last destination, but the official data being kept hidden in KOSST, which has provided the Infocus newspaper, shows that exchange between electricity transmission networks, Kosovo and Serbia has been a total of imports and exports in quantity of over 195 thousand megawatts.

This energy in a small amount, as experts say, could also have been passed as transit through Kosovo's energy grid, but the likelihood is small when you see the substations from which the amounts of this electricity have been exchanged.

MST: Import from Serbia and export to Albania

Also interesting is the exchange of electricity to the Albanian state. During September, while Kosovo had imported over 170 thousand megawatts from Serbia, with Albania the import was only 20,000 megawatts of electricity.

The opposite of these exchanges is in export. For the same period, until Serbia, Kosovo has exported only 25 thousand and 200 megawatts, to Albania it has exported about 130 megawatts of electricity.

With the Albanian state, Kosovo is known to have trade agreements without commercial implications, but with a return of 1 to 1 for megawatts.

While figures show that the largest amount of imports has been from Serbia, the largest export of energy from Kosovo to the network of neighbouring countries figures in Montenegro's.

The exported amount of electricity from Kosovo to Montenegro, according to these documents is over 150 thousand megawatts, while the import with this state has been very small, amounting to only 3600 megawatts.

With Macedonia, however, import has been high in quantities of over 80 thousand megawatts, while export has been around 16 thousand megawatts.

M ST: The Allashveres don't stop even though two parliamentary commissions are investigating energy collectors

At the same time when electricity trade is being done to the tune of 60 % with Serbia, two investigative commissions formed on May 5th of this year are working in the Kosovo Parliament.

These two investigative commissions were formed after the major debate that erupted following the Kosovo ambassador scandal in Croatia, Martin Berisha, suspected of linking him to a Belgrade-based energy company from which he had received about 600 thousand euros.

One investigative commission is badly investigating possible management and abuses of last year when the country was in a deep power crisis, demanded by the opposition, while the other commission is investigating the period between 2009 and 2021 wanted by the ruling party Vetevendosje.

The ongoing latter have raised debate and had major criticism of the electricity trade with Serbia.

Even now, the ruling party consistently promotes achievements that have halted energy trade with Serbia.

The most vocal on this subject is recently Vetevendosje MP Armend Muja. In the latest post, MP Muja has written that Kosovo between 2006 and 2013 has imported electricity from Serbia worth 314m euros.

In this post, when asked by a citizen where electricity is now being imported Kosovo, the ruling party's deputy has responded by saying import is now from Denmark, Macedonia and Albania. /GazetaInfocus
