Hill: Serbia should have an approach to resolving problem with Kosovo

US Ambassador to Serbia Christopher Hill in an interview for Happy TV, speaking among other things about the problem between Kosovo and Serbia, said that “is in this century or the next, Serbs when they wake up will see that Kosovo Albanians are in the south and the same applies to Albanians and [...]
Earlier, many Serbian media had wrongly reported the above sentence of the ambassador, citing him as saying “when Serbs wake up they would see that Albanians have taken Kosovo for themselves”. The same media have later updated the news with the exact sentence of Ambassador “when Serbs wake up will see Albanians in the south”, writes the KoSSev portal.
Hill also in this interview has said that the Kosovo issue is difficult for Serbia, but also that it thinks there should be an approach that will be directed towards resolving that problem.
At the same time, he underlined that the US supports the European Union's efforts, which mediates dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia.
“I think Western countries are asking Serbia and Kosovo to stick to the dialogue process and try to lower tensions in order to create space for bilateral talks, which would lead to normalisation of relations.
At the same time, Hill said once again that there is not much similarity between the events related to Kosovo in 1999 and the current situation in Ukraine.
Hill estimated that Western countries are asking Kosovo and Serbia to stick to the process of dialogue and try to lower tensions and create space for them to talk to each other to achieve normal relations.
While for how much benefits Serbia can receive in co-operation with Western countries in the field of energy, Hill said Serbia needs a “strengthening” in this direction.
“One of the reasons for our concern in co-operation with Serbia now is Russia's behaviour. What Putin has done with Russia is another Russia from what I remember and we have to be ready for this and that the best form of preparation is that we all work together even closer to”, Hill said.
In question of what would be the best decision Serbia could make in this situation, Hill said it would be best to connect with Western countries, focus on what can be done now and continue in that direction.
“The US really wants to stay close to Serbia, which we see as a historical friend, partner, but depending on what Serbia will take, can become our ally in the future, it will depend on Serbia”, Hill stressed.
