US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Grenfield told CBS News that the administration is “concerned about a UN event that can become a hot hearth and that all measures must be taken to prevent the meeting of world leaders from becoming a place for the spread of COVID-19”.
Unlike last year, when the pandemic forced the biggest annual event in the UN to be virtual, this time political leaders can send video messages, and they can also personally come to New York for a session.
More than 100 presidents, prime ministers and other politicians have announced they will speak directly at the session, and the general debate will be held from 21 September to 27 September.
Biden will speak in New York on September 21st and will be accompanied by a slightly smaller number of White House representatives than usual.
Earlier, the New York authorities requested in a letter to the president of the General Assembly, Abdullah Shahid, that all who come to UN headquarters should show evidence of corona vaccine.
