One of the main KLA founders, Hashim Thaci, had crossed the border about 27 times illegally since 1992. He indicated that the most painful crossing was that of 1996, when, along with Kadri Veselin and Jakup Nura and a group of other friends, crossed the border from Albania via Bajram Curri, the mountains at the Montenegro border Kosovo, then crossed the mountains of Decani, Yunik to land in Dukagjin, where they met fellow fighters.
They did not plan that the 72-hour-long journey, because the terrain was very dangerous and preserved by Serbian and Montenegrin borders.
Thaci had indicated that even the Paterrick Mountains were very dangerous because they were boundaries of cuts, barricades and 99% possibilities were also to be killed.
He indicated that in the Middle Ages, they have often taken refuge even though winter had overtaken them.
