At the International Security Conference “20 years of freedom: A vision of lasting peace”, Clark has recalled a telephone conversation with the former NATO secretary.
Clark had recalled that when Solana gave the news that the Russians had arrived in Pristina, he said KFOR troops would be in Kosovo in the morning.
I remember this day, June 12th. It started with a call at 0100 a.m. from Javier Solana, who told me: What are we gonna do? ) I said, Secretary General, we're sending KFOR in the morning. On June 12th, KFOR has started with moves in Kosovo from its positions in Macedonia. I was very proud of the forces that entered. They entered armed, but they came here to create peace. They haven't fought, they haven't had any difficulties, even though there have been several mines. By 1600 with General Jackson, we have arrived in Kosovo. He went to the airport and welcomed a Russian general, and the next morning I arrived at Skopje Airport, where we met with General Jackson”, General Clark said.
We remember, today, 22 years since NATO's bombing against Serbian forces stopped.
On June 12th 1999, the first NATO infantry troops have landed in Kosovo, while the evacuation of Serb forces has begun. The mission was divided into five areas of responsibility belonging to US, English, French, German and Italian KFOR. /
