EU representative worries Kosovo: Serbia can move towards Europe without dialogue

The head of the European Union delegation to Serbia, Sem Fabrizi, said today that reforms in the field of rule of law are urgent for Serbia's progress on the road to EU membership, stressing that Kosovo- Serbia is not a prerequisite for opening new chapters. For a long time now, Kosovo has hoped that Serbia would stop the path towards the EU just through dialogue, conditioning it to recognise the country's independence so it can open up new chapters of membership.
Speaking to RTS, he said it is early to say whether Serbia would open new chapters at the Intergovernmental Conference in June, but now it is necessary for the government in Belgrade to focus on results-giving reforms and not just “the abstract concept of reforms”.
This year's “task is for Serbia to focus on reforms, especially in the field of rule of law”, Fabrizi said.
He also praised that the reform process in Serbia has progressed, but in some areas, such as rule of law, that progress is very small.
Fabrizi also mentioned that dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia is not a prerequisite for opening other chapters.
The negotiation process includes various areas, one of which is normalising relations with Pristina, and the other rule of law. Normalising relations requires a strong partnership and commitment for dialogue”, he said.
Fabrizi stressed that now Kosovo, after the last elections, needs to be dedicated to more dialogue.
