Germany called for greater efforts by Serbia and Kosovo in talks on normalising their relations, more than 20 years after Belgrade lost control of its former province.
Kosovo declared independence from neighbouring Serbia in 2008, but Belgrade, supported by Russia, China and several European Union member states, refuses to recognise it.
“It is time to continue the normalisation process and achieve results”, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said during a press conference after meeting with Serbian President Alexander Vuciq in Belgrade on Friday.
It is important that this dialogue not be developed only for the sake of dialogue, results must be made. Germany is willing to assist in this regard”, Maas added.
On the other hand, the Serbian president declared: “Serbia is not asking for an excuse to fail to compromise, she believes the frozen conflict is not the best solution, because someone can always melt it. ”
He also added that even improving reports with Albania is necessary for a secure future. It is clear that Serbs and Albanians will be the two largest nations (in the region) within the next 100 years. The essence of progress is in peace”, Vuciqi said.
