Their absence has marked delays in the communication process in all EU member states.
The commission was launched last Friday a legal action against the AstraZeneca company on the basis of violations of the purchase agreement”, said Stefan De Keersmaker, an EU spokesman.
Some conditions of the contract have been ignored and the company has been unable to come up with a reliable strategy to ensure the timely distribution of vaccine doses”, he said.
The British-Swedish firm AstraZeneca dismissed the EU's allegations as of “without base”.
“AstraZeneca has fully fulfilled the agreement with the European Commission and will be strongly protected in court”, it said in a statement.
AstraZeneca said it plans to hand over about 50 million doses of the anti-coronvirus vaccine to Europe by the end of April. But that amount, according to Brussels, is much lower than what was envisioned in the agreement.
The commission said the company has provided only 31 million doses of 120 million as expected to send in the first three months of this year.
Diplomats said any court proceedings against AstraZeneca would begin in a Belgian court, as it is thus envisioned in the contract.
