He said the <x0-Norrd Stream 2” gas pipeline, which is being built by Russia to Germany, conflicts with the interests of the European Union itself and can undermine Ukraine.
Germany has been trying to complete the construction of this pipeline despite continued opposition from the United States for more than a decade. Speaking on his first visit to NATO headquarters, the US chief diplomat said he will meet with German counterpart Heiko Maas to discuss the matter.
“President Biden has been very clear, he believes the gas pipeline is a bad, bad idea for Europe, bad for the United States, ultimately contrary to the EU's own security goals”, Blinken said during meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
“It (the pipeline) has the potential to undermine the interests of Ukraine, Poland and several close partners and allies”, Blinken added, saying that with American law, Washington is required to impose sanctions on companies taking part in the “Stream 2” project, Reuters writes.
The pipeline, which has become “, draws the fight” between the United States and Germany, has already been completed around 95 percent and could be completed in September, according to analysts.
The United States fears that Russia could use this pipeline as a tool to weaken EU states by boosting their dependence on Moscow.
