An FBI internal circuit warns that, according to analyses conducted until Sunday, protests could begin this week and continue until the day of the inauguration of President Joe Biden, according to federal officials who had read the details of the announcement and spoke to the Associated Press news agency. Investigators believe some of the participants are part of extremist groups, officials said.
Armed “protests are being planned in the capitals of 50 states from 16 to 20 January,” said the internal announcement according to an official. Officials had no authorisation to speak publicly, so they discussed the Associated Press on condition of anonymity.
The FBI had issued at least another domestic warning before last week's violent protests. On December 29th, the FBI warned of the possibility of armed demonstrations targeting the legislature's headquarters, the second official said.
General Daniel Hokanson, head of the National Guard, said Monday in press remarks that the Guard is analyzing all concerns throughout the country:
“We are following developments across the country, in close co-ordination with local law agencies, so that we can provide the support required from”.
Violent protests followed several weeks of calls for violence in Washington via internet posts as President Trump's mandate ends.
A tweet where President Trump promised Wednesday's protests would be out of control, fed “a month of promotions, strategies and embracing violence against lawmakers,” concludes a research group that analyses extremist online activity. In a report released Saturday, SITE Intelligence Group warns that the attack on the Capitol has encouraged extremists who support Trump.
