Experts: Sixty thousand jobs are laid off and thousands of businesses, no social schemes recovery

Kosovo cannot have economic recovery only with the distribution of the budget for social categories and with a lack of support for businesses and workers infected by the Pandemia Covid19. This form of support has been criticised by economic connoisseurs, who require this government and what will come after [...] elections.

This form of support has been criticised by economic connoisseurs, who require this government and what will come after the February 14th elections, a serious platform reflecting on the real situation from the impact of pandemic on the extinction of over 60 thousand jobs, the bankrolling of thousands of businesses, and the loss of markets.

University professor Muhamet Sadiku has said that the government has made an effort to create an economic recovery programme, but, as he says, only national resources are involved until the funds of the European Commission, the World Bank and other international financial institutions are lacking.

“We at this moment if we want to give integral answers to this situation, we need to have an integral programme of economic recovery based on domestic resources and external resources, which has not happened... Kosovo's government has provided through the new budget sharing system a social assistance to certain groups, for some levels of society, but that's far from what Kosovo needs. Kosovo does not need a one-year recovery, but we will need a several-year economic recovery to return Kosovo to the first economic position of pandemic must go through a period that must be accompanied by effective governance... This is the only way for Kosovo to get rid of this very uncomfortable situation, always associated with job loss, banking many businesses, losing markets, and all of this will affect a tighten of Bruto Product and financial tightening”, Sadiku tells the KP.

As for expectations from early elections, Professor Sadiku also stresses that Kosovo needs a more efficient and accounting government.

Unfortunately, Kosovo has long voted for leaders, voted on family, tribal and regional grounds, but Kosovo has started to change from within. We have the appearance of a new political class, a new generation, which will understand the accountability, because Kosovo has so far governed without accountability, so it is possible in the upcoming elections to increasingly talk about development programmes, economic programmes, well-being, social objectives and Kosovo's integration position in relation to the European Union. I believe these elections represent a turning point, because the population in general has understood the essence of economic and social progress... Because according to the World Bank, about 7-8 per cent of Kosovars a day are going to consume less than two dollars per person. This is an impatient situation”, he points out.

The chairman of the OAK Council of Afarism of Kosovo OAK, Skender Krasniqi, says of KosovoPress, that if business demands are not taken into account even further, 2021 will be even more difficult on the economic level.

“If continued with the ignorance of requests as continued and happened in 2020, the situation would be extreme worse than 2020. We're hoping that Kosovo's institutions, young but also this up to their current shift, will take into account the demands of businesses, will be more co-ordinated with us, in order to support business, to create an offer to keep jobs, because we have a drastic drop in the number of workers, we have a drop in revenues of both businesses and the state, which, in the absence of the flow of businesses, do not pay as much as the circulation of”, says Krasniqi.

Krasniqi also says that in the second quarter of 2020, over 60 thousand workers who are still without support, such as businesses that have suffered from the Devid-19 pandemic.

“There is nothing more than examining them (requisitions) in discussion and approval in order to overcome this major and serious crisis in which businesses are, but there are workers and families who are not supported when they are out of work. Meanwhile, only in last year's second three months of 60 thousand countries are out of work, 600,000 families are out of income, and no cents have been supported as unemployed. So this is a severe blow that has happened to citizens, workers, families, but also businesses that are very difficult if there's no support to support and recover from the severe shock that happened to”, Krasniqi said.

The head of the OAK further says greater institutional will is needed to implement the Law for Economic Resiliency in support of businesses and workers.
