Administration Trump said the measures were being re-established under mechanisms of the agreement the US left behind, the BBC writes, translates Periscopi.
The United Kingdom, France and Germany said the US had no power to take such action.
These three states along with China, Russia and the United States were parties to the agreement signed with Iran in 2015 to cut off its nuclear programme.
But President Donald Trump, critic of the Obama era accord, withdrew from the deal in 2018.
As a result, Iran too began to violate some of its vows, including uranium enrichment.
The US said this country should be punished, announcing that all UN sanctions that were suspended should be restored.
