The BBC quoted Maros Shefchovic, an EU official, as declaring that the planned bill in Great Britain had “seriously damaged trust” and that the EU would not be the shy “” to use legal action against official London.
The British government said parliament was sovereign and could adopt laws violating the obligations of the Great Britain Treaty, meanwhile, trade talks between Great Britain and EU officials are continuing in London.
The source of EU concern is Prime Minister Boris Johnson's proposed domestic market bill, which was published on Wednesday. He addresses the North Ireland Protocol an element of the withdrawal agreement designed to prevent the return of a strong border to Ireland.
The bill does not propose new controls on goods moving from Northern Ireland to Great Britain. It gives British ministers competencies to modify or “not to respect the rules regarding the movement of goods that will come into force on January 1st if Great Britain and the EU are unable to make a trade agreement.
The EU dismissed London's arguments that the bill was designed to protect peace in Northern Ireland by arguing that “did otherwise”.
Maros Shefchovic said that if the bill was adopted, it would constitute an extremely serious <x0-edge” of the international withdrawal and law agreement. He urged the government to withdraw the bill “by the end of the month”.
The Internal Market bill will be officially debated by MPs in Parliament for the first time Monday, September 14th. /Periscopi/
