The Danish government announced on Tuesday it has secured the majority of parliament's support for a new law that will deal with sexual relations without permission as rape.
Justice Minister Nick Haekkerup said the proposed law represents “one of the biggest victories for gender equality in Denmark for a long time --”.
From now on, rape in Denmark will not be treated only as a result of physical violence, compulsion, or when the victim cannot resist, for example, because he is under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Neighboring Sweden adopted a similar law two years ago.
The justice ministry announced that the burden of evidence will continue to be on the prosecutor.
Along with Haekkerup Social Democrats, the proposal was supported by socialist liberals, Socialists and the left-hand Unity List.
The proposal will be voted in October, when the Danish parliament meets again.
