Headaches, confusion, and vitality experienced by some of the patients with COVID-19 may be the result of a direct insight into the body, according to the results of a study.

According to research conducted by immunologist Akiko Iwasaki of Yale University, the virus is able to multiply within the brain and its presence removes oxygen from nearby brain cells, but the size of the phenomenon is not yet clear.

Andrew. Josephson, head of the Department of Neurology at the University of California, San Francisco, said it was an extremely important “to determine whether there is a direct viral action in the brain”.

However, he adds, he wants to be careful considering that the findings have not been examined by other field experts.

Experts believe that it is not quite surprising that the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVIID-19, can go from blood to brain tissue and overcome this physical barrier, whose task is to prevent alien substances from breaking into the brain.

This works, for example, for the mourning virus, which has led to considerable damage to the fetus' brain.

Doctors have so far believed that the neurological effects seen in half of those with COVID-19 are the result of an excessive immune response known as a cytokinian storm that also causes inflammation of brain tissue rather than direct exposure to the virus.

By studying adult brain tissue in the laboratory, the team found that the SARS-CoV-2 virus is capable of infecting nervous system cells and then using neurons themselves to copy.

Infected cells caused the surrounding cells to die by reducing them from the oxygen they needed to live in.

One of the main arguments against the theory of the virus's ability to penetrate directly into the brain was that the brain lacks sufficient levels of ACE2 proteins to which the coronary is connected and which is abundant in other organs like the lungs.

However, the team found that there was enough protein ACE2 in the tissue of the brain grown in the laboratory to facilitate the spread of the virus and that this protein also existed in the brain tissue of dead patients. Coronervirus ' presence was discovered in the brain of three patients who died from COVID-19.

In the infected areas, there was no indication that they were covered by immune system cells such as T cells rushing into countries where other viruses, such as the famine virus or herpes, seem to destroy them.

This suggests that a highly active immune system known as the cytocan storm, which is responsible for most lung damage to patients with COVID-19, may not be the main cause of neurologic symptoms in these patients.

One of the scientists' hypotheses was that the nose can represent the path of the virus's access to the brain, but the authors of the study say this should be confirmed by research.

They added that more autopsys were needed to determine the rate of brain damage to deaths from COVIDD-19.
