More than 40,000 people signed a petition and demanded that France take control of Lebanon after the deadly explosion in Beirut.
More than 44,000 people have signed an internet petition for the “deployment of Lebanon under a French mandate for the next 10 years”. The petition on the Avaaz petition page has reportedly been initiated by Lebanese citizens following the explosion that rocked Beirut on Tuesday, killing over 140 people and injuring more than 5,000 others.
Lebanon's “Offices have clearly shown a total inability to secure and manage the country,”, said the petition. “With a failed system, corruption, terrorism and the country's militia is in the last range. ”
“We believe Lebanon must return under the French mandate in order to establish a clean and stable government. ”
Dima Tarhini, from DWʹs Arabist department, said the petition had been crisscrossing knowingly on Social Media.
Dima Tarhini, from the DW Arab department, said the petition has circulated widely in Lebanese social media. It shows that the desperate “are several Lebanese,” she said. “They've lost a lot. They lost their homes and properties, they couldn't save their children. They don't know what to do. ”
France has controlled Lebanon from 1920 to 1945 under a mandate imposed after World War I.
The petition addressed French President Emmanuel Macron, who was the first foreign leader to go to Beirut on Thursday after the tragic explosion.
Macro warned in Beirut that Lebanon will continue to sink “if it does not undertake reforms.
He promised that France would help mobilise relief supplies to destroyed Beirut, where damage and destruction amounted to billions of dollars.
“
France's prosecution has launched investigations into the blast, because at least 21 French citizens were injured and one killed.
