John Hume, former politician and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize for the closure of the conflict in Northern Ireland, has died at the age of 83.

Hume was one of the highest profile politicians in Northern Ireland for more than thirty years and influenced the creation of circumstances to end the fighting in this country.
The former teacher first gained fame during the Civil Rights Movement in 1968. He was one of the founders of the Social Democrat and Labusist Party in Northern Ireland in 1970.
Hume became chairman of this party in 1979 and gave up his post in November 2001.
