Coronervirus' pandemic is still present around the world, but the latest weekly data published by O The BSH shows a slowdown in the epidemic in most regions, especially on the American continent.
“More than 1.7 million new cases of COVID-19 and 39,000 new deaths were reported to WHO last week (17-23 August), representing a 5% drop in cases and 12% of deaths, compared to last week (10 to 16 August)”, the organisation said.
The American continent remains the most affected, representing half the new cases and 62% of deaths reported last week.
However, this region is also the region where the epidemic has slowed mostly, with an 11% drop in new cases and 17% of deaths, in part thanks to the slower transmission in the US and Brazil, the two most affected countries in the world.
Southeast Asia, the second most affected region, has registered a 4% increase in new cases and deaths in the past week, where India continues to be the most affected country in this WHO region, with 455,000 new cases recorded last week.
In Europe, where the number of new cases has risen steadily in recent weeks, the pace has slowed slightly to + 1% last week, according to O data BSH, while the number of new deaths continues to slow, by -12%, even though not all European countries.
