The whole city was rocked by the explosion, which started with a fire in the explosion port, writes BBC, broadcast Periscope.
President Michel Aoun said 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrates had been safely stored in a warehouse for six years.
He scheduled an emergency cabinet meeting for Wednesday and said a two-week state of emergency must be announced.
The country will observe an official mourning period for three days from Wednesday.
President Aoun also announced that the government will issue 100 billion lira (50.5m; $66m) emergency funds. ”
What we are witnessing is a major disaster,” said Lebanon Red Cross head George Ketan for local media.
There are casualties and victims everywhere”.
