A Turkish lawyer seeking fair trial on charges of membership in the terrorist organisation has died today in an Istanbul hospital on the day of 238 hunger strike.
Her friends said Ebru Timtic weighed just 30kg at the time of her death, while the event has sparked severe condemnations among opposition parties in Turkey.
“Ebru Timtic was on the 238th day of strike that hunger to seek fair judgment, she is already a martyr! ” announced the People's Law Office, the left organisation of lawyers focused on the country's political affairs.
Timtic was a member of a lawyer's association, accused of links to the Marxist organisation “Revolutionary Liberation Front”, which is responsible for a series of assassination attacks in Turkey, including the suicide attack on the US Embassy in Ankara in 2013, where a security guard was killed.
In 2019, an Istanbul court sentenced 18 lawyers involved and Timtic on charges of “members of the terror group. ”
Timtic was sentenced to 13 years in prison, which prompted him and several other lawyers to start a hunger strike in February.
