NATO is considering opportunities to transform Pashaliman's naval base in Vlora into a model project. This fact has been discovered by Albanian Defence Minister Olta Xhacka, who along with American Ambassador to Albania Yuri Kim, have visited this base.
Minister Gacka stated in this case that Albania and the US share not only important operational missions but also goals for modernising Albania's (FA) Armed Forces.
“With US Ambassador Yuri Kim, we paid a visit to Pashalyman Marine Base, for which we are assessing the possibility of modernisation and transformation into a NATO model project. Then a short trip to the Gulf of Vlora was defeated by the Butrinti P-134 ship, which has participated several times in the operation “Sea Guardian” of NATO in the Aegean Sea, saving hundreds of immigrants. With our strategic ally, the United States of America, we share not only important missions in operational theaters but also the common goal of modernising our Armed Forces”, states Defence Minister Olita Gacka.
In October of last year, Minister Olta Xhacka has been addressed through an official letter to the commander of the Supreme Command for Europe, American General Todd D. Walters, setting out to the Albanian government's plan for modernising Pashaliman's naval base with the aim of using it by NATO. Minister Gacka has announced to NATO leaders that Albania is ready for implementation of a joint plan for developing the maritime base for the North Atlantic Alliance. If such a requirement was accepted by NATO, then it would be the only Alliance in the Balkans to respond to immigration challenges, or security from threats.
And in response to this request, Secretary General NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, said from Brussels that Alliance experts are praising and considering that. NATO's <x0) military authorities are working closely with the Albanian military authorities to determine the best way that Pashaljman's naval base could support NATO operational naval requirements”, a Alliance spokesman in Brussels confirmed.
