The ship was launched successfully by the Cape Canaveral air station in Florida about 7:50 local time.
This is the third mission going to the red planet this month following missions launched by the United Arab Emirates and China, writes The Guardian, following Periscope.
The 6-row Rover will travel for about six months to try and land in the Mars Jezero crater.
March landing is known for the difficulties it has due to the dynamic atmosphere there and is described by astronauts as “the minutes of terror”.
