At least eight mass graveyards discovered in Libya, UN secretary expressed shock

United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has been deeply shocked with the discovery of mass cemeteries in Libya's territory that he recently recovered from control of forces commanded by General Khalifta Haftar. Guterres also called on the UN-backed Libyan government to secure mass cemeterys, identify victims, reveal death causes and return troops to family members. His spokesman announced that the secretary has offered United Nations support for taking these measures.

The general secretary once again reminded all sides of the conflict in Libya of their obligations under international humanitarian law and international human rights law”, Guterres spokesman said, writes the “The Guardian”, broadcast the Express newspaper.

The United Nations announced on Friday that at least eight mass cemeteries were discovered in Libya, most of them in the town of Tarhuna, which had served as the bastion of Haftar forces during the 14-month campaign to take control of the capital, Tripoli.

These findings have sparked fear of the level of human rights violations in territories controlled by the forces of General Haftar, taking into account the difficulties of documenting cases in an active war zone.
