On June 26, 1987, the Convention against Torture and other cruel, inhuman, degrading, or punishment sentences came into force.
This was an important step in the very necessary process in globalising human rights and acknowledging that torture and all forms of mistreatment or inhuman or degrading punishment are absolutely illegal.
In 1997 the United Nations General Assembly decided to mark this historic date and set June 26th as the International Day of Support for Torture Victims.
Governments are reminded of their responsibilities to victims of torture, as described in the UN Convention.
Article 14 of the United Nations Convention against Torture specifically predicts that states should make compensation for survivors of torture, including the means for complete rehabilitation.
