US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has said there is a significant number of evidence “that proves that the new choreography was released from a Chinese laboratory.
However, Pompeii did not contest the assessment of American intelligence agencies that the virus was not man - made.
Both Pompeo and US President Donald Trump have sharply criticised China, accusing of lack of transparency.
“There is a significant amount of evidence that the virus emerged from that laboratory in Vuhan” told the American TV station ABC on May 3rd.
The new Coronavirus was first presented in China at the end of last year. So far, more than 247,000 people worldwide, including more than 67,000 in the United States, have died from COVID-19 disease.
The best “Experts so far seem to think it was man-made. I have no reason to believe that at this point”, Pompeii said.
When asked about the assessment of American intelligence agencies, that the virus was not made by man, Pompeii withdrew saying “I saw what the intelligence community said. I don't have any reason to believe they've made a mistake”.
The April 30th report by the National Intelligence Director's office said it was reconciled to the broad scientific “consensus” that the disease was not man-made.
Pompeii accused China of blocking the access of international investigators to Chinese labs.
“We are trying to send a team there, the World Health Organization is trying to have a team there”, Pompeo said, adding that “nobody is allowed to go to this lab [Vuhan] or some other” lab.
The State Department did not immediately respond to a request to clarify Pompeii's comments.
China has denied the charges, saying the United States had no evidence that the virus emerged from the laboratory in Vuhan.
President Trump said on April 30th that he was sure the virus may have originated in a Chinese virology laboratory, but he refused to present more details.
Some American officials have said that they believe that the virus has either been transmitted to humans through contact with wild animals at a meat market in Wuhan, or it may be accidentally released by one of the two labs in Wuhan believed to be involved in civil research for possible biological dangers.
