A powerful Amfan Cyclone hit East India and Bangladesh on Wednesday, damaged houses and clay and was followed by storms along the coast, authorities announced after the evacuation of millions in the middle of a coronary pandemic.
A 70-year-old man died when a tree fell into Bangladesh's Brola district, a police officer said. Bangladesh has evacuated 2.4 million people in shelters.
Another 650,000 people have been evacuated by the Indian states of Odysseus and West Bengal, authorities said. Evacuation was accomplished despite an increase in coronary infections.
Winds are rushing up to 185 miles per hour, said Mrutyuny Mojapatra, director of the Indian Meteorological Institute.
Mohapatra says that a powerful storm can flood Sundarbans, houses for four million people, and a dense forest area considered the only remaining habitat for Bengal tigers.
“We estimate that areas ten miles from the coast could be flooded,” said Mojapatra.
Authorities in Western Bengal and neighbouring Odysha have had trouble evacuate people to shelters prepared for quarantine in the Coronobrus epidemic, an interior ministry official said.
Additional shelters were prepared in markets and government buildings, and masks were distributed to locals.
Police in West Bengal say some residents were reluctant to agree to an evacuation for fear of being infected with coronarys, while others were reluctant to leave their livestock.
Farmers in Bangladesh have been helped to move their products and hundreds of thousands of animals to an elevated area.
Authorities in Bangladesh have also announced that they have transferred hundreds of Ringya refugees from Myanmar from an island near the Bay of Bengal to a shelter.
