Mexico's Health Ministry reported on Thursday 1,982 new confirmed cases of coronary infections and 257 additional deaths, the deadliest day since pandemic reached second largest Latin America, Reuters reports.

The new figures bring the total number of confirmed cases to 29.616 and 2,961 deaths. However, the government has said the actual number of infections is evidently higher than confirmed cases.

Mexican officials urge residents to observe social distance measures before Mother's Day on Sunday and have closed the main Mexican flower market and cemetery, where people tend to gather for the holiday.

They have even suggested transferring the holiday in July

Viewed as one of Mexico's most important holidays, Mother's Day corresponds this year to what health officials estimate, the peak week for the spread of the Roman coronary.
