Ambassador James S. Gilmore III commented on Thursday the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II.
The US ambassador said, recall their participation and losses in people during that major conflict, along with allies, including Russia at the time.
Remembering the full history of World War II, Ambassador Gilmore said, we cannot forget that for many peoples in Central and Eastern Europe, the end of Nazi oppression was replaced by imposing or re-enforcement, against their will, Communist oppression. To them, the full blessings of freedom that Western Europe celebrated in 1945 came only in 1989, 1990, or later. ”
He said that as the Soviet Union's army and civilian population made remarkable sacrifices to defeat the Nazis, it should not be forgotten that World War II began in 1939, when Stalin and Hitler reached an agreement that divided Eastern Europe into areas controlled by Soviets and Nazis.
For many European countries, Ambassador Gilmore said, 1945 marked, not the return to freedom, but the beginning of nearly 50 years of oppression by the Soviet Union.
“We, the US ambassador said, urge Russia to give up exaggerated claims based on the deliberate interpretation of history. ”
He said the US stands in solidarity with European partners against the counterfeiting of history from Russia.
