Coronervirus' Pandem has sparked rivalry between Turkish President Recep Tayip Erdogan and opposition leader in Istanbul Ekrem Imamoglu.
They argue about the collection of funds and a possible blockade that may threaten a coordinated effort to fight the Coronavirus epidemic.
The central government in Ankara has announced that the money collection campaign launched by the mayor of Istanbul is illegal and threatened that those involved will respond, Reuters reports.
Imamoglu launched a campaign this week under the “banner we will have success together”, demanding money and other donations from the richest Turks for hundreds of thousands of those who do not.
Erdogan then launched a rival campaign of National Solidarity and promised seven of his monthly salaries.
Various state institutions, companies and politicians contributed, and the president condemned municipal campaigns.
“There is no point in having a state within the state,” told Erdogan his AKP officials, saying no one has the right to raise funds other than the presidency.
Turkey's Interior Ministry said that with the start of the campaign, Imamoglu had violated the law because he had to ask permission before collecting money.
Rivalry is much more than money collection, as Imamoglu wants to block Istanbul, Turkey's largest city with a population of 16 million, while Erdogan wants to preserve economic output and exports.
The 13,531 Coronavirus and 214 deaths have been confirmed in Turkey.
