The newspaper reports that everyone is looking forward to auctions now to see how much the sale of old coins will reach.
An anonymous donor threw a gold coin into the box near the Tampa supermarket near Christmas without a message, and a few days later another one.
Both coins will be auctioned in Dallas.
If the coins were sold on the basis of gold alone, they would be worth about $450 each, auction representative Todd Imhoff said, adding that their value was certainly higher.
Dallas's auction is selling bills from around the world, and the auction house will not receive any commissions to sell both coins.
Rescue Army spokesman at Tampa Andy Miller said the donations surprised everyone.
On one side of the coin is a Roman consul accompanied by two persons who guarded it. On the other hand, there is an eagle with outstretched wings that sits on a scepter and a crown of laurels.
The auction house says there are thousands of such coins in the world and that they were all found around 1550 on the land where Turkey, Iran and the Black Sea are now located, and that they may be worth several thousand dollars.
During the winter, the Salvation Army in Tampa collects 75 percent of the funds needed to operate its emergency housing for homeless people. Sometimes up to $400,000 is collected.
