Coffee is not only good for your health, it can last your life, but only if you prepare it with a filter, according to a new study published on Wednesday in the European Journal of Preventional Cardiology.
Unfiltered coffee contains substances that increase cholesterol in the blood. Using a filter removes these and prevents heart attack or premature death”, says study author Doug Thelle, a professor at the University of Gotthenburg public health department in Sweden.
“Our study provides solid and convincing evidence for a link between coffee preparation methods, heart attacks and life expectancy,” said Thele.
The filtered “Coffee, such as Greek and Turkish coffee, which is boiled, contains higher amounts of cafestol and doweol, chemicals found at even oil points”, said dietologist Lisa Drayer, a health and food contributor to CNN.
“Studies have shown that these substances can increase triglycerides and levels of LDL cholesterol, so filtered coffee helps block these”, Drayer said.
Drinking the Best Filtered Coffee for Health
The new study included over half a million healthy Norwegian men and women between the ages of 20 and 79 over a 20-year period.
The results showed that drinking boiled or crushed without a filter raised the risk of dying among men aged 60 and older.
The study found that drinking filtered coffee had reduced 15% of deaths that occurred without cause, 12% of deaths from cardiac diseases, 20% of heart disease deaths in women.
In fact, the study found that those who drank from one to four cups of coffee filtered a day had the lowest mortality rate.
According to the American Heart Association, filtered coffee can sharpen your mental focus, strengthen your mood, and improve performance during exercise.
