I have declared the state of emergency. An extraordinary decision in an extraordinary” period, conservative President Marcelo Rebello de Soussa said during a televised speech.
“is not a disruption of democracy. But it is democracy that is trying to prevent an irreparable interruption of people's lives”, he explained to justify this decision, which has not been seen since the arrival of democracy in 1974.
The government will take concrete measures, which may include restrictions on free movement. They will be announced Thursday after the cabinet's weekly meeting.
