This is the first time that official Tehran has finally spoken about the pandemic within its borders, although it has been asked several times what the situation is.

The number of sufferers is 19,640, while so far there are 1,433 dead, thus making Iran the most hit state in the Middle East.

On the basis of the information we have, every ten minutes a person dies of coronavirus and about 50 others are infected with the virus every hour in Iran”, said a health ministry spokesman.

Ali Rabei, a representative of President Hassan Rouhani, has said: “The number of deaths could be higher and the results of the test for the victims may have been wrong. Many have died, while we did not know it was due to coronavirus”.

But political opposition groups have said that statistics can actually be even more serious, considering that so far, 7,000 individuals have died because of this disease.

The Iranian government has ordered the closure of schools and universities, as well as the ban on sports, cultural and religious gatherings in an effort to control the disease.
