Construction Society: Workers Refuse Work Where Lives Are Threatened

Security in Kosovo's construction sector continues to remain one of the main challenges, although according to the Kosovo Construction Association, recent months have seen visible improvements in implementing security standards in the country.
Kosovo Construction Association Chairman Valon Vataj, in a proposal for IndexOnline, said the security level is still not where it should be, but stressed that companies are showing greater commitment to protecting workers.
The security of the builder still remains not at the level we all want, but recent improvements are visible and encouraging. We as the Construction Associations in Kosovo are on constant monitoring of the security situation in the sector and we have encountered excellent co-operation with construction companies, which are showing more and more commitment in implementing security measures, training workers, and establishing standards in the working place”, Vataj said.
He stressed that security responsibility falls not only on companies and institutions, but also on workers themselves.
“Every worker should refuse to work in places where his life and health are threatened, use personal safety equipment, and respect safety procedures at the site”, he said.
Vataj urged workers to report any violation or lack of safeguard clauses, stressing that only through joint response can accidents be prevented.
“At the same time, we encourage workers in cases where they face a lack of security measures or in dangerous working conditions to become signals to responsible institutions and the Kosovo Construction Association so that we can react together to prevent accidents and raise security standards in the sector”, he said.
According to the head of the Construction Association, building a stronger security culture requires the joint commitment of companies, workers, institutions and professional organisations.
“Only through co-operation between companies, workers, institutions and professional organisations can we build a stronger security culture in the workplace”./ Periscope.
