Hanssen was an FBI agent, but was arrested for spying on the Soviet Union and later Russia.
The evidence against him was inconsistent, so he also received a life sentence.
Hanssen sold the KGB thousands of classified documents describing in detail the US plan in case of a nuclear war.
He also gave the KGB materials about military weapons technology as well as other materials at the expense of the United States.
The Justice Department described the case as the “probably the biggest intelligence disaster in US history”.
Hanssen served the Soviet Union and Russia from 1979 until he was on the way, with several years of vacation between his double activity due to the risk of exposure.
Currently, he suffers his sentence at a high-security prison in Florence, Colorado.
