70 tons of snow have been transported by helikopeter to the barren slopes of the Pyrenean mountain ranges, which separate the Iberian Peninsula from France and spans some 430km from the Gulf of Biscaya to the Mediterranean Sea. The extraordinary operation was conducted to cope with snow shortages at the Luchon-Superbagnères ski resort, due to extremely high temperatures for the winter season. But the decision has been criticised both for costs, even for its environmental impact and for its harmful helicopter emissions, writes The Guardian.
Hervé Pounau, director of the local department council, said the cost of the operation would be restored from business over time.
The “will cost us between 5,000 and 6,000 euros, given that in the long term we will receive at least 10 times the return of this investment,” said Pounau in a statement.
This is the first time French Pyrenees use helicopters to transport snow, although similar operations have already been conducted in the past in the Alps.
