Ambassador Richard Green, sent by President Donald Trump for Kosovo talks Serbia, called on the Kosovo government Tuesday to lift punitive tariffs against Serbian goods that have blocked the negotiation process between the two Balkan countries.

Mr. Greenell, ambassador to Berlin, said the United States expects the <x0tarifs to be removed immediately”.

“We have made clear to all leaders of parties in Kosovo that the lifting of tariffs was in Kosovo's best interest and its economy, as well as the intentions to attract new businesses. And party leaders have hired”, he said in a statement sent via email to the Associated Press news agency.

Ambassador Green last month brokered an agreement to establish the airline between the two countries after 21 years and opened discussions on reopening the railway line under them.

“We are marking historical progress,” Ambassador Green said. “There are many new ones to be published soon because both sides want to move on. These movements will create a better life for people in the region”, he said.

Days earlier during a visit to the region, US envoy for Kosovo-Serbia talks Richard Green said that “Kosovo must lift tariffs, while Serbia should end the campaign for attracting recognitions of Kosovo”.

On Tuesday, European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell welcomed the formation of Kosovo's new government, led by Albin Kurti, while stressing that he expects the intensifying of discussions concerning co-operation between the EU and Kosovo, reforms and facilitated talks by the European Union between Kosovo and Serbia.

The European Union remains committed to work with Kosovo institutions and citizens on the European road. There is much work ahead for the new government to meet obligations from the Stabilisation and Association Agreement, the European reform agenda, rule of law and economic development. Regional co-operation should be strengthened, as should good neighbourly relations. In this context, we expect the rapid resumption of talks between Belgrade and Pristina facilitated by the European Union for sweeping normalisation of relations. The current situation is not sustainable. There is no alternative for a quick resumption of talks on normalising relations between Belgrade and Pristina”, said in Mr Borrell's response.

It also requires renewed Kosovo's commitment to regional initiatives in its behalf.

“The challenges facing Kosovo are great, but such are the possibilities of Kosovo. We are willing to help Kosovo in the European Reforms agenda and continue our support in strengthening the rule of law for all, improving public administration to provide services citizens deserve, job creation and economic growth”, said Mr. Borrell's office announced.

He stayed in Pristina and Belgrade last week under efforts to renew talks blocked since autumn 2018, when Kosovo imposed tariffs on Serbian goods in a sign of opposition to Serbia's approach to its independence.

Belgrade conditions the resumption of talks with the removal of tariffs, while Kosovo's current government rejected even European and American calls for removal or suspension.

On Monday, Kosovo took place with the new government following the October 6th snap elections last year. The new prime minister, Albin Kurti, said his government would establish “reciprocity fully with Serbia”.
