Twelve-year-old girl dies because of banned habit

The 12-year-old death was the reason for the Egyptian public prosecutor to order the arrest of her parents and the doctor who carried out the procedure, also known as female circumcision, the prosecutor's office said.

However, women's rights activists believe that there is still a vacuum in the law. In particular, the criminal law condemns maiming the female geniusal body only when there is no medical justification.

Since the mid-1990s, Egypt has faced an increasing number of such cases, a century - old custom that was wrongly believed to control the sexuality of women.
