Schieder Eurodeput: Albania May Be Future History of EU Enlargement Success

During the European Parliament's plenary session on the European future of the Western Balkans, Eurodeput Andreas Schieder praised Albania's progress on the road to membership in the European Union, calling it one of the most advanced candidates in the enlargement process.
Schieder stressed that Albania already has “one leg in European camp”, underlining broad public and political support for European integration.
According to him, over 90 per cent of Albanian citizens support EU membership, while the goal of concluding negotiations by the end of 2026 is already a realistic perspective.
“Albania has shown an extraordinary commitment to the European Union model. The opening of all negotiating groups within 13 months testifies to the political will to advance reforms”, he said.
Eurodeput also praised the progress in fighting corruption and the adoption of signal protection legislation, stressing that the membership process should bring concrete improvements in the lives of citizens and not be perceived simply as a technical process.
An important part of Schieder's speech was dedicated to sustainable tourism -- a topic that, according to him, has been widely discussed in Albania.
Sustainable “Tourism is the only way forward. Tourism creates jobs and economic growth”, he said.
Schieder voiced confidence that the country will continue to implement these standards not to jeopardise the progress achieved in the integration process.
Speaking of future challenges, he stressed that enlargement implies all implementation of long-term reforms that strengthen the rule of law, social justice and improve the lives of citizens.
As rapporteur and connoisseur of developments in Albania, Schieder said that during numerous visits to the country, he has observed a high level of optimism and commitment by institutions, civil society and citizens.
“Albania and its citizens are working together to achieve these goals. That is why I am convinced that Albania can be the next story of European Union enlargement success”, the Eurodeput concluded. / TCh
