France, a former colonising power, is the only Western country to have considerable military presence in Mali, where operations are under way against militants are under way.
In 2012, militants occupied the northern part of this country.
The French army expelled them in 2013, so over 4,000 French troops continue to be in Mali.
A peace agreement signed in 2015 by the Mountain Government and armed groups has been aimed at restoring stability in this state, but all pacts have failed to stop the violence of Islamic militants.
The leaders of the Sahel region G5 group, including Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Mali, Mauritania and Chad, during a summit held in December 2019, calls for international co-operation and assistance to combat the threat by Islamist militants.
French President Emmanuel Macron said 7 February that the country plans to increase military presence in the region.
