The High Representative underlined that this appointment reflects the importance the EU and it personally devotes to stabilising the region and progress on the road to the EU. Josep Borrell recalled that he remains personally committed and strongly committed to supporting the European perspective of the Western Balkans and playing his role as facilitator of the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue, said a communique by Borelli's office.
It notes that during telephone conversations with Kosovo President Hashim Thaci, Prime Minister Albin Kurti, as well as with Serbia's president, Aleksandar Vuciq, the EU's top representative, has updated the discussion he had with the leaders during his visit to Pristina and Belgrade in January.
In Belgrade, Borell had said the EU should engage more in relations between Serbia and Kosovo.
The European Union must appoint a special representative who will be very committed because I am not sure that I will have enough time to engage and postpone the dialogue before”, Borell said after meeting with the Serbian president.
Dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia has ceased at the end of 2018, when Kosovo has taxed 100 percent of Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina's imports.
Serbia has conditioned the return to dialogue with the removal of the tax, but Kosovo despite the international community's calls continues to keep that measure in force.
In October last year, US President Donald Trump has named US Ambassador to Germany Richard Green as special envoy for dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia.
With his mediation, Kosovo and Serbia in recent weeks, two agreements have been reached -- the one for railways and the Pristina-Belgrade airline.
