German Chancellor Angela Merkel said today that she hopes for a start in negotiations on the EU accession of Albania and Northern Macedonia before the end of the German presidency of the Council in December, during a virtual speech at a EU-Western Balkans co-operation forum called “Berlin Process” in Sofia.
“I hope it will still be possible for us to organise the accession conference under our presidency”, she said.
You must say yes, agree! This is very important”, the head of the German state added during this meeting co-chaired by Bulgaria and Northern Macedonia, countries that failed to succeed in resolving their disputes, the ATS reported.
“One of the goals of our EU presidency (...) is to advance the enlargement process and we intend to do so in the coming days and weeks”, German diplomacy chief Heiko Maas said in turn.
Today's forum in Sofia also adopted a declaration establishing a common market for the Western Balkans based on EU standards.
