Cancer patients may soon have their entire treatment course in less than a second, according to new research.
“
It would end the disturbing and exhausting difficulties of regular hospital visits facing millions throughout the world that could last months. New technique uses loaded particles instead of X-ray for radio therapy.
It allows high energy protons to be targeted directly into a tumor, causing less side effects. Known as radio therapy, it is set to revolutionize oncology.
The initial study also showed that it had the same effect on tumors as traditional radiation while saving healthy tissue due to shorter times of exposure.
This is the first time someone has published findings that demonstrate the possibility of using protons instead of electrons to generate doses of flamelash, with a accelerator currently used for clinical treatments,” said study author James Metz, director of the Proton Center at Pennsylvania University.
The study, published in the International Journal of Radiation oncology, Biology and Physics, generated the required protonic dose.
Proton therapy is so targeted that it can avoid healthy tissue, especially organs behind the tumor.
Radio therapy can lead to side effects such as vomiting, and sometimes could disrupt the mode of functioning of certain organs, Kosovo Press broadcasts.
This means that it is effective for treating cancer that affects critical areas, such as brain cancer.
There were 17 million new cancer cases worldwide in 2018. The four most common species are those of lungs, breasts, intestines, and prostate glands.
These four make up more than four in ten of all diagnosed cancers. Globally, there will be 27.5 million new cancer cases each year by 2040.
